Went to see the Lion King in Shanghai Great Theatre this afternoon.
Five minutes before the musical started, I rushed out of a taxi, and hurried for the entrance. Several people tried to stop me on the way, to persuade me, to sell me a new ticket, while I already had one right in my hand.Â
“Simba is sick!” One man claimed, smugly.
I stared at him blankly.
“I meant the actor who plays Simba. He is sick! You should buy my ticket and see it tonight.” He continued, as if I was that stupid.
Uh…obviously I didn’t have time to ask him whether it was the young Simba or the adult Simba who got sick…however…I did manage to get seated before…the animals marched along the aisles onto the stage.
A lot of animals(25 species to be exact)…it’s hard to imagine…men and women, dressed up in dazzling costumes as colourful, lively animals…! All the audience got pretty excited when a huge fake-elephant walked down the aisle.
But I love the giraffes most:

And the zebras:

Basically, the songs are almost the same as the movie OST(except three newly added ones), the dialogues are almost the same…not to say the wording, even the intonation, the way the hyenas shriek! I just know the movie too well. People of my age might know the CrazyEnglish(not that crazy LiYang). I had the audio book CrazyEnglish released in 1997(?), special edition for the movie, with selected scripts and songs. I listened to it, let’s say, about a hundred times!!!
btw, i love the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. Didn’t know it was also used in The Lion King. If you watched Friends Season 1, the episodes about Ross’ monkey Marshall…you probably still remember the jungle song. hooray!
Praiseworthily, the musical has undergone localization. Chinese stuff was cleverly inserted in the show from time to time. I was surprised to find the song Zazu sang, which used to be like “I’ve got a lovely bunch of coconuts”, was replaced by another notoriously famous Chinese song(I won’t ruin it by telling you the name here…haha, you may guess.)
